Daily Prompt: Counting Voices
A lively group discussion, an intimate tête-à-tête, an inner monologue — in your view, when it comes to a good conversation, what’s the ideal number of people?
Good conversation with any number over two voices is an oxymoron…there is no such event as a good three (3) way conversation. Someone always gets left behind or has a thought swirling around waiting for the most opportune time to voice it and then it becomes non-relevant as the conversation crosses over to another entirely different topic. The third person might as well read a good book during the lively two (2) person verbal exchange.
Four (4) people having a conversation will quickly evolve into two (2) individual conversations (see below requirements) covering totally different subjects. Or a shouting match as each individual pushes for inclusion and equal time in the four person conversation.
Good conversation requires two (2) good listeners, who are intelligent and can discuss common subjects without using their iPhones to Goggle for an answer, refer to a Tweet or Facebook posting or use their “Call a FRIEND” card for support.
I’d vote for that inner monologue but with so many voices vying for attention in my internal world I seek silence by interacting with another life form to quiet them. Strait jackets aren’t on the fashion wheel in this girl’s closet.
